Why Avocados Are An Amazing Natural Skincare Ingredient

History of Avocados

Avocados came to their height of popularity during the 2010s when Mexican food began getting more popular in western countries - particularly Guacamole. In Canada alone, 250 million avocados are consumed in a year. (Fun Fact: In the summer of 2017, more than 3 million photos of Avocado on toast were uploaded to Instagram every day!). Packed with vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that keep you healthy, it’s no wonder that Avocados have become so popular.

Avocados are known to contain Riboflavin, which is widely found in both plants, and animal-based foods. Riboflavin is important for the growth, development, and function of the cells in your body, while also turning the food you eat into the energy you need. This is a huge reason why Avocados are so popular with Vegetarians and Vegans! As well as containing other vitamins and minerals such as Potassium, B6, Vitamin E, and many more, Avocados make a great addition to any meal if you are looking to make healthy changes to your diet.

Now, most people will be aware of a little bit about how avocados are good for your health, but did you know they are actually incredibly beneficial to your skin?

What Are the Benefits to Avocado For the Skin?

Avocado oil is extracted from the pulp of avocados, and it can be used as an edible oil for cooking or used in cosmetics.  The oil contains antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents which helps to benefit your skin in a variety of different ways. Due to the anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, avocado oil helps calm itchy skin as it provides a soothing feeling, which also helps minimise inflammation to the skin - these properties help those who suffer from acne, psoriasis, and eczema.

Avocado oil also contains an oil you may already know called Vitamin E. Vitamin E oil is full of antioxidants which helps prevent the effects of free radicals on our skin. Additionally, it can moisturise the skin, leaving it feeling hydrated and looking smooth. Vitamin E also helps protect against sun damage as it helps absorb free radicals from the environment – you will find that most after sun gels contain Vitamin E.

When Avocado oil is mixed with a blend of another powerful oil, Sweet Almond, the benefits for the skin can almost be limitless..

Dorrie explains “We use Almond oil in a number of our skincare formulations as it contains such a wonderful variety of nutrients including Vitamin A & E, Omega-3 Fatty Acids and Zinc” as you are starting to realise, the humble nut is not just great for eating! She goes on to say that “The benefits of these nutrients include the prevention of wrinkles and skin damage, improving balanced hydration, controlling break outs and prevention of clogged pores”

If you’ve found yourself reading that list thinking you need some of those benefits, you may find that you have oily skin. It is common for those with the oily skin type to recoil in horror if you suggest using any product that contains oil, however, it is actually a common myth that oily skin doesn’t need hydration! It absolutely does. Using a moisturiser twice daily that contains Almond and Avocado oils can actually help slow down your sebaceous glands from over producing oil, because it’s not desperately thirsty for moisture!

With the combination of Avocado oil and Almond oil it provides a long list of powerful benefits, from hydration to acne controlling, to preventing wrinkles. You will find that these benefits and properties such as anti-inflammatory and hydrating cater to a variety of skin types such as dry, sensitive, or oily.
